Having a disability insurance plan in place provides a security net should you be unable to work due to a medical condition. One of the largest disability insurance plans, Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), is deducted as part of social security taxes from your paycheck. The purpose of the program is if you or specific members of your family suffer a total disability and are unable to perform your work duties, then monthly benefits would be paid out for the loss of income.

In order to qualify, you would have to had worked a specified minimum time period and have paid social security taxes to be considered insured. And if the requirements are not sufficiently met then the claim would be rejected. This then gives the right to initiate a disability appeal to have the case reviewed.
