Osteoporosis and exercise have a strong connection. As to why that is, first know what osteoporosis is all about. A bone disease, that is what osteoporosis is. If you have this ailment, there is more risk of getting a fracture. This is because the density of the bone minerals is greatly reduced. There is also a disruption with the bone micro-architecture. Aside from that, there is an alteration of the non- collagenous proteins found in the bone. Usually, osteoporosis becomes more evident with old age. Still a lot of young people suffer from osteoporosis.

It is also evident in studies that this bone disease usually happens to the female population. Despite that, many elderly men suffer from the same ailment. Because osteoporosis is bone damage, a person’s life span is considerably affected and shortened. Even a person’s quality of life is significantly reduced. So how then is osteoporosis and exercise connected? You may think that with the disease, exercise is out of the question. You may think that with exercise, a person with osteoporosis is subjected to more risks. However, that is not entirely the truth. In fact, exercise can help a lot of people with osteoporosis.

Note that, exercising will help you prevent getting osteoporosis in the first place but if you already have it, do not worry. You can still exercise and improve your condition. What is important though is that not any exercise works with osteoporosis. You can only do exercises that are the safest. It also varies from person to person what exercise to do basing on the severity of the ailment. Before starting any regime, reliable medical advice should be obtained. Basically, there are three categories that help the osteoporosis and exercise issues. These are flexibility exercises, strength trainings, and weight-bearing aerobics. Again, do not forget to ask a doctor before exercising.
